An ophthalmologist is a licensed physician — an M.D. or D.O. — who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of defects and diseases of the eye, performing surgery when necessary or prescribing other types of treatment, including glasses.

An optometrist is a licensed specialist in vision — an O.D. — trained in the art and science of vision care.  Optometrists specialize in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the eyes and the preservation and restoration of vision.

An optician is one who grinds, finishes, fits and dispenses eyeglasses and contact lenses, based on a prescription of an eye care professional.
