Let’s Play: A Guide to Toys for Children with Special Needs
“What
do food, water, clothing and play all have in common? They are all part of
a child’s basic necessities to thrive in life! While the products
featured throughout this Guide may be unique, the need for play in a
child’s life is not! All children need play in their lives. And, despite a
child’s interest, gender and abilities there is a toy out there that will
encourage his or her love of play.”
The toys in the Guide have been tested by 100 children at 10 centers
across the country, in conjunction with the Alliance for Technology
Access (ATA) and the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB). These toys
are just a sampling of the thousands of wonderful products that are
available to your child. You will find a description of the toy, an
explanation of skills and labels indicating who may find the toy
enjoyable. The labels include:
PI=Physical Impairment;
A=Adaptable for Physical Impairment;
HI=Hearing Impairment;
B/LV=Blind or Low Vision;
DD=Developmental Disabilities.
