ALERT!
Trendy Colored Contact Lenses

It has been brought to our attention that the trendy nonprescription, powerless (plano), colored contact lenses are being brought into Illinois illegally and sold to school age children. They are wearing the contacts, and, in some cases, passing them on to their friends. Unfortunately, these lenses are being sold without the benefit of professional eye exams and disinfection instruction.

At first glance, school officials, including school nurses, may not recognize the seriousness of the eye problem, which can resemble “pink eye.” But, if not treated in a timely manner, the infection may cause permanent scarring and permanent loss of vision.

We have also heard that the American Optometric Association (AOA) has issued a warning against using food coloring to tint contact lenses. This is also a very dangerous practice, which may cause eye infections, reactions to dyes or tints and/or red, blurred vision.

The ISPB urges all contact lens wearers to follow the instructions of their eye care professional. If a problem develops call them immediately.
